boxI’ve been asked the question recently of what I wanted for Christmas. My automatic response was…hmm I don’t really want anything. Now reflecting back, I think what I mean to say is that I don’t need anything. This got me thinking of those two words:  WANT and NEED.

To NEED something could be defined as a condition marked by the lack of something requisite. To WANT something could be defined as the state of being without and desiring something that is absent or unavailable.

There’s always that saying that you want what you can’t have….and it’s true. As humans, we usually want what we can’t have and we end up fighting our hardest for it. What happens when you continue the fight and you still don’t have what your heart wants? Do you stay and fight the good fight…or do you give up and walk away from the battle. How much are we able to endure mentally, emotionally, psychologically…physically…until we decide to raise the white flag in defeat?

Or is it that we choose to walk away from the battle because we truly see that no matter how hard we try, we cannot procure happiness for others and in not being able to do that, we cannot make ourselves happy? When do we realize that the leaps of faith that we take in hopes of attaining what we so desperately want only hits walls of resistance and the battle is futile? When do we come to self-actualization and consciousness that maybe we just can’t have that object of desire now?

When do we also come to realization that the world is bigger out there and we have only seen a mere facet of it and that we have to be the one who makes a conscious and daily effort to reaching our dreams? What if our dreams don’t include everything that we want?? When is enough, enough?

    1. a requirement, necessary duty, or obligation: There is no need for you to go there.
    2. a lack of something wanted or deemed necessary: to fulfill the needs of the assignment.
    3. urgent want, as of something requisite: He has no need of your charity.
    4. necessity arising from the circumstances of a situation or case: There is no need to worry.
    5. a situation or time of difficulty; exigency: to help a friend in need; to be a friend in need.
    6. a condition marked by the lack of something requisite: the need for leadership.
    7. destitution; extreme poverty: The family’s need is acute.

I’m not one to have ever loved Kelly Clarkson, but I love this song. Sometimes you make sacrifices because you have to, not because you want to. Sometimes you make sacrifices not because you want to, but it’s been asked of you.

You know that I love you so, I love you enough to let you go…
