future_freeway_sign250_1 A week ago I embarked on a trip cross country with a good friend who needed a companion to accompany her on her way back to the east coast.

Being that I suddenly came into a wealth of time, I decided to take the plunge and grasp the opportunity to see the country and drive across the United States from west to east.

While I knew this trip would open my eyes to a slice of the American world, it also has pried open my heart and soul into other destinations not of the physical realm.

I’ve come to realize many things about myself and also about various groups of friends and individuals who make up the different social circles of my life. With so much to think about, it leaves me wondering what lies ahead when you take the road to the future. Stay tuned.

handcuffMerriam-Webster defines freedom as the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action and the liberation from slavery, restraint or from the power of another.

I’ve recently been granted this freedom, and not by choice. It’s been one of the best things that has happened to me. Prior to this newly found freedom, I was living a life of patterns, routine, consistency and stability. Since then, my world has been tumbled upside-down and inside-out…leaving me initially in a cloud dust of confusion and misdirection. What happens when one is so conditioned to a life of monotony that when given the hand of freedom, one does not know what to do?

Remember the movie, Shawshank Redemption? The character Red said Brooks Hatlen was an institutionalized man…someone who becomes incorporated into a structured and often highly formalized system. This is what I am talking about. I departed from an institutionalized life into one of complete freedom….and freedom is GREAT.
